PRESIDENT’S PAGE
While visiting the NOSC, I picked up a copy of the December All Hands magazine.
I found two good articles in the magazine that I want to pass on.
First article I would like to acknowledge was about our Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine (SSBN) crews 50 years
of Deterrence. These boats
, often referred to as "Boomers", have provided the United States its #1 strategic
deterrence since the 1960’s.

Those of you that have been on our tours to Bangor have had a chance to view these great undetectable launch
platforms. To the Blue and Gold crews of the SSBN’s we give you a big thank you.

Second article was about Navy Seabees. After reading this article I now realize that our Seabees are a key
piece of the philanthropic side of the U.S. Navy. Seabees have been in South Africa providing humanitarian
missions in Uganda, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and the tiny island of Comoros rebuilding schools and even a bridge that
had been washed out. What impressed me was that at the end of a hard day’s work the Seabees spent time
interacting with all of the children. The lives of these young school children through the rebuilding of the schools
will be changed forever and I know that the lives of our Seabees will never be the same after their experience.
I would like to acknowledge our own local Seabee unit,
Navy Mobile Construction Battalion 18 who are about
to be deployed. 50 to 60 of local sailors will be heading to Afghanistan for seven months building infrastructure
on our military bases as well as infrastructure for the civilians. Our prayers and support need to go out to them
and their families while they are away from us.
Don’t forget to attend our March 2nd meeting. Our guest speaker will be Captain Scott Ryder who is the
Commanding Officer of the Navy ROTC at WSU and University of Idaho. Also there will be some special visitors
at our meeting so don’t miss this one.

Thank You,
Keith Phillipy

TOURS
Bob Kistler has backed up the Whidbey tour from May 25 - 27 to the weekend of the Regional Conference in April. While there
are still plans to be made, here is what is tentatively planned now. Tour fee is $15.00. We will leave Spokane by 5:30 AM Friday
April 16 and come home on Sunday. This trip and tour will include those who want to do the Conference and those who do not.
We do expect that everyone will at least take in one of the dinners and the speaker. At this time, we have not heard who is
speaking when. Bob has set aside rooms at the Whidbey Naval Station. This is single queen bed per room. One or two people
same charge of $40.00 per night. More details later.
No change for the D.C. tour. September 8-16 2010 $20.00 fee.
Discussion and research continue for the PT Boat tour proposed for the Portland Rose Festival weekend in June. Right now the
boat is still in the cradle in dry dock and is not expected to be in the water in June. We could take a walk through as the inside is
still available. Take a look at the web site!

NATIONAL PIE DAY ?
The American Pie Council has set aside January 23 as National Pie Day! Each year they select a different theme, and this year it was "Hometown
Heroes." Cyrus O' Leary Pies encourages the celebration. They selected the Lilac City Chapter of Pearl Harbor Survivors to be the recipient of three
cases of apple pies. The pies were presented at their monthly meeting in January. On hand to receive the pies were Bud Colburn and Ray Daves.
Cyrus O' Leary Pies, during the week of the 23, also offered discounts on pies at the base commissary and delivered pies to area COP shops and
fire stations, and some others.

USS BREMERTON
The first USS BREMERTON (CA130), a Baltimore heavy-class cruiser, was commissioned in April 1945. The 1000+ men aboard Bremerton
represented almost all of the then 48 states, plus the territories of Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. Of note is the size of the ship's fuel
tanks, which could carry her form the U.S. to Japan and back, non-stop without the need to refuel. After WWII, she was put in reserve in San Pedro
Calif., then re-commissioned in 1951. She was decommissioned again in 1960.
USS BREMERTON (SSN 698) The second and current Bremerton is a Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine, commissioned in 1981. In October
1982 she made her first good will visit to the City of Bremerton and in August 2009 she visited Puget Sound area for the second time.
